Moray – maras & Salt Mines Tour
Peru Path invites you to take a step back in time and explore our city with the fascinating legends, myths, history, land scape with the best staff, get the feeling of an explorer by discovering the Authentic Inca Empire in this small day tour.
Head off the beaten path to two authentic and unique sites located in between Cusco and the Sacred Valley of the Incas, the salt mines of Maras and Moray the Inca place. Both places contemplate a very special feeling; consider unique places for those people that have a preference for photography.
If you got free time this is a great option to take while you are waiting or relaxing in the city.
We drive for around 1 hour to the first stop in Moray, which is the oldest Inca archaeological site in the world, known for its horticultural experimental center. Each terraced level has a different micro-climate in which different crops can be grown. Known as well as a natural green house.
The circular terraces descend to 500 feet (150 meters) and the temperature difference between the upper and lower terraces is up to 60°F (15°C). For those up for a small hike, you can walk down to the lowest level to get a true sense of the magnitude of the site – just be prepared for the hike back up to the van or the parking area!
Later, we drive to Maras or known as LA VILLA DE SAN FRANCISCO DE MARAS, this is located about 4.5 km from Moray, and is the site of pre-Inca salineras (salt ponds). Each terraced pond or Parcel is polygonal in shape; salty water emerges from an underground spring, flows into the ponds, and evaporates with the sun.
Its very impressive to know that the salt mines are still active today and maintained cooperatively by the Maras community. The white salt ponds contrast with the green hills and mountains around and the views of the Sacred Valley from here are amazing.
We start the tour with a pickup from your Cusco hotel, and the entire trip lasts around 6 hours. You will return to your Cusco hotel by early afternoon or if you need to be drop in Ollantaytambo let us know, we will be very happy to make it possible.
